Chillbrook has landed..

I have arrived in Iceland once more!  So good to be back.  It was a positively balmy -8°C today but it doesn’t feel nearly as cold as Cornwall does at +8°C but that is down to the very dry cold.  It makes all the difference to how the air feels when it’s free of moisture.  That said, it was a bit breezy today so my trusty fingerless gloves to allow me to control my camera and mittens for in between shots were an absolute must.

We were back at the Snaefellsnes Penisular today and a place some of you might recognise from my last trip when I photographed this location at night, under the northern lights.

Kirjusfellsfoss is a much photographed location but it’s easy to see why.  I was unable this time to photograph the waterfalls from below because of the depth of the snow between the rock edge and the water so no path down but I was just as happy with these shots of the frozen waterfalls from above.  I hope you enjoy them.. :-)

    • Thank you Dina, Klausbernd, Siri and Selma. My love of Iceland is always very much heightened in the winter months. Yes it’s cold but I have warm clothes. Iceland is beautiful in all seasons I know but there is something about Iceland in winter. The wild, beauty of the winter landscape moves me beyond words and quite frequently to tears. :-)

      February 4, 2016 at 9:22 pm

      • Oh, I know the feeling. Adrian. Snow and ice can move me to tears too and Klausbernd and the girls feel the same, I know. Enjoy the heartwarming cold nature! Dina Xx

        February 5, 2016 at 3:22 pm

      • Thank you so much Dina. It may be very cold here but the beauty does indeed, warm my heart!

  13. Wish I was there!!! I’ve had enough of the weather here and would much prefer the crisp cold of Iceland. Not only that but it just really is the most glorious landscape!! Great photos as always :-)

    February 1, 2016 at 11:55 pm

    • Thank you Sarah. I’m not surprised you’ve had enough of the weather in the UK. I was so grateful to leave a cold, wet and persistently grey Cornwall behind. What happened to our seasons I wonder. We have a warm, grey wet winter followed by a cold, wet and grey summer. Not much fun is it? :-( Iceland on the other hand is just beautiful at the moment! :-)

      February 2, 2016 at 7:11 pm

      • It’s been playing havoc with my health too :-( So fatigued! Do you get the same? Seasons don’t seem to exist at all now and it’s causing all sorts of problems for the wildlife too :-( It was brighter today but blowing a gale!

        February 2, 2016 at 7:24 pm

      • Sorry for the late reply to this comment Sarah. The weather certainly doesn’t help me either. I get incredibly tired too, despite sleeping on average 13 or 14 hours a night.

        February 8, 2016 at 6:12 pm

  14. Wonderful! You seem to be lucky not having the wind we had. And I loved the northern light link – we did not get any…Looking forward to more of you!

    February 2, 2016 at 12:04 am

    • It has been very windy Ann Christine. Today we were unable to travel east because of the severity of the predicted storm which is raging as I type. The days have been very bright up until today though but no northern lights so far. I’ll be sure to post if we’re lucky enough with the weather and the solar winds are favourable also! :-)

      February 4, 2016 at 9:12 pm

      • Looking forward to it – stay safe in the storm.

        February 4, 2016 at 10:00 pm

      • Thank you Ann Christine. The storm has now passed thankfully but the roads a treacherous at the moment. I’m taking things very steady! :-)

    February 2, 2016 at 4:07 pm

      February 2, 2016 at 7:02 pm

      • It seems difficult to walk in this snow, glad you didn’t have to walk for too long !

  36. Mark Simms

Fabulous as ever…..I’m not sure I’ve seen a waterfall of that size frozen before. Looking forward to seeing more images from your latest trip to Iceland.

    February 3, 2016 at 6:39 pm

    • Thank you Mark! You wouldn’t think waterfalls of this size would freeze though the water is still running somewhere amongst all the ice but even falls as large as Gulfoss (watch this space) freeze to some extent. :-)

      February 4, 2016 at 9:52 pm

  37. Lovely shots

    • Thank you very much Plamen!

      February 7, 2016 at 5:57 pm

  51. I’ve never understood how a large waterfall can freeze up. Seems like the weight of the falling water would keep it from happening.

    February 5, 2016 at 7:28 pm

    • The water is still falling behind the ice Karl. What you see when you look at a frozen waterfall is just a whole lot of icycles that form very slowly and but build up, little by little!

      February 8, 2016 at 6:03 pm

  52. Beautiful! Will be there soon.

    February 5, 2016 at 7:29 pm

    February 6, 2016 at 8:25 pm

    • Thank you very much Lynne. This is a raw, savage and very unforgiving environment in winter but I absolutely love it. It touches me somewhere deep inside and yes, I really do think it heals. :-)

    • Thank you Nidhi! I can understand when one has to work and get to the store and all the other everyday activities we all have to do, snow could indeed be a real nuisance but as you say, you can’t deny its beauty! :-)

      February 8, 2016 at 10:57 am

  80. Great shots Adrian – that is such an iconic mountain standing there in splendid isolation.

    February 7, 2016 at 5:37 pm

    • Thank you Andy! I’m not sure of the geology behind this wonderful mountain but with the waterfall for some foreground interest, it provides the perfect backdrop for an interesting landscape photograph!

      February 8, 2016 at 10:55 am

  81. That looks stunning! I honestly have always avoided areas with ice I just don’t like the cold but after those pics I think I’m having second thoughts! Thnx for sharing!

  99. Very Beautiful! I’ve been all over Europe but never in Iceland. I’d love to go! How long did it take you to capture the “right” picture?

    February 16, 2016 at 4:32 pm

    • Thank you Mike! I guess I was at this location for about an hour. I always like to take my time, experience the landscape before I start taking pictures. Sometimes however, traveling around, it’s a case of jumping out of the car and setting up in seconds as the light can be so fleeting.

      February 16, 2016 at 8:36 pm

      • This photo of yours is amazing!!! i hope i can visit Iceland sometime soon. If i do i will try to take a photo as cool as this! [but i don’t know if that is possible]! :D
