The Sun Also Shines – part one..
As followers of this blog will know, I like bad weather. At least, I like to photograph dynamic weather. As a result I feel sometimes that I do Iceland a disservice as many of my photographs tend to be taken when the weather is doing its thing.
However, of course the sun also shines in Iceland and when the sun shines in the winter months, it’s magical. Daylight is very limited, just a few hours a day and with the sun hanging so low in the sky, the light has a wonderful quality.
Last week I shared some pictures of Vik in the Sunshine. This week I’m sharing a few more blue sky landscapes. As I started to go though my archives, I realised there were far more sunny days over the last couple of winters I’ve been in Iceland than I’d remembered so I’m going to be posting these picture postcard winter landscapes over several posts. I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed taking them..
Finding the road can sometimes be an issue..

Stunning blue sky photos, Adrian. It looks like no place I’ve ever been to, even in my dreams. The picnic table image is totally surreal, and driving on those obscured roads is not for the fainthearted.

Thank you Sylvia. It is a little daunting driving on roads that are rapidly disappearing as the wind blows the snow covering the tracks you’re following and not knowing quite what the ice is covering either side of you, this one was a bit of a white knuckle ride but we did arrive at the most beautiful glacier that I’ll post pictures of next time! :-)

Beautiful work. I guess even if you didn’t find the road, you would have had numerous photo opportunities.
Since the daylight hours are limited, do you go out with a specific plan of what to shoot, or do you just go wherever your eyes take you?

Thank you Mr Dragon! Indeed there’s always a photo to be found in Iceland. When I first visited, it was basically a case of wherever my eyes took me. As I’ve got to know the country, I usually set out with a clear intention of where I want to take photos but there’s always lots of stopping on the way to wherever that might be. :-)

This is such a beautiful scenery, Adrian. Almost like being on a skiing holiday. Do many people ski there at all, I wonder?
I really do like the sunny shots. For once, because of the rather calm sky and the (almost) lack of clouds. It makes a difference. Like a little break from the dramatic scenes. And when the bad weather shots appear again, it makes them look even greater. :-)
I must admit I love the dramatic clouds we have in Norfolk. When Klausbernd sees my photos, he find the clouds “too much” so I have to point out, that’s how it is! It looks great in nature, he thinks, but it doesn’t look natural in a photo. So at the moment, with this gorgeous weather we are blessed with, I have to point out how colourful the sea is, how blue the sky is and how reddish golden the fields are, it’s not photoshopped at all. And still I tend to reduce the colours by 20%. :-)
The clouds now resemble smooth silk scarfs, almost see-through and Norfolk is celebrating summer. We are off to the village summer party on the green in front of the church.
We very much look forward to seeing the next captures from the glacier!

Thank you so much for your lovely message Hanne and Klausbernd. Iceland is beautiful in all weather and it’s nice to show the nice weather photographs too I think. People do ski in Iceland. A favourite place for Skiing is Akureyri in the north of Iceland. I imagine Norfolk is looking very beautiful at the moment. I’m very much looking forward to being back there in a few weeks. We call those wispy clouds that you describe so nicely as Mare’s tails. I hope that you enjoyed your village summer party. Have a great Sunday! :-) x

You are certainly not doing Iceland a disservice the way you always show its beauty. Sunshine is no different, once again you have captured some stunning images. I really like the one with the tracks disappearing into the mountain in the background.

Thank you Otto. I felt it was about time I posted some photographs from the sunny days we have enjoyed in Iceland too. Not my favourite conditions in which to take photographs but the landscape is so very beautiful in any weather and when the sun shines, especially in winter, it is stunning. :-)

Yes, you do inspire people to get out in the rain, wind and harsh weather ~ but it is also great to see you can excel when Mother Nature is on her best behaviour as well :-) Cheers to a great continuation of summer photography ~

Thank you Randall. Yes these sunny days made a nice change to battling the blizzards and the near hurricane force winds and it’s been nice to re-visit and reflect on Iceland in the sunshine. Iceland is beautiful in any weather but a bit of winter sunshine really goes a very long way! :-)

Thank you again Lynn! You’re very kind. It was interesting to say the least, driving toward that glacier, approaching that hump in the road that you see in the fourth photograph I had to stop and take the picture. It was fun not knowing what we might find on the other side. As for the last picture, the sun so low in the sky in the winter months gives such tremendous opportunity given the light is so wonderful. :-)
