Any day at the beach is a good day..
Whilst I was visiting Bude recently, I had to deliver some pictures that are being featured in an exhibition in Taunton, Somerset. This journey took me from north Cornwall to south Devon, on into somerset and rather than return the same way I’d come, I decided to drive north to the north Devon Coast.
In 1976, here in the UK, we had the most extraordinary summer. Weeks of Mediterranean type weather. I was lucky enough, as an 11 year old boy, to spend that summer staying with a great uncle in North Devon. Everyday we visited the beach. Saunton Sands was the destination of choice and this was somewhere I really wanted to revisit.
Unfortunately, the weather was certainly not that of the summer of ’76 however, it was great to see people enjoying the beach regardless.

Oh the Summer of ’76 ChillB … we ‘ve talked recently of different memories evoked by those times lol …
Lovely sweeping vista of Saunton Sands .. what a beach ! That little family you captured eptimomises the carefree late summer early autumn days we’re enjoying at the moment :-) xx lovely !

Thank you Otto. I remember this beach as a child being seeming to go on forever. When we revisit places as adults, sometimes they seem so small compared to one’s memory and reference as a child. Not so at Saunton Sands. It’s still vast! :-)

How I love these images…the immensity of beach and sky and sense of solitude…and I couldn’t agree more with the title of this post. The summer when I was 11 is the one I remember most vividly (though it was spent far from any beach). What a wonderful place this must have been for an 11-year-old boy to spend a summer!

A couple of fabulous images Adrian. I spent a summer holiday in Bude as a small boy – I don’t remember a lot about it, except we visited Tintagel and Trebarwith.

Thank you Mark. Wet sand, as I found in Iceland too, is incredibly reflective and if you catch the tide just right, the scope for some great photography is there for the taking. :-)
