We live in a beautiful world..
But we live with evil amongst us. The news from Manchester over night has left us all so shocked. That those that seek to hijack our way of life and terrorise us should choose such a soft target, chilldren and young teenagers enjoying a concert, I’m beyond words.
The way people reacted to this atrocity: people forming lines to ensure disabled people in wheelchairs were able to exit the venue amidst the panic, people who were genuinely fearing for their lives and whose first instinct must have been to run did not; those that stopped to pick up people who fell, fighting the tide of panicked people rushing for the exits, making space and carrying them out; the taxi drivers, turning off their meters to ferry people away to re-unite them with their loved ones; the restaurants and hotels offering shelter, food and support to those affected and a million and one other kindnesses, make us realise that goodness prevails and will always prevail.
This evil was met instantly with love and solidarity. Ordinary people of all faiths and those with none, interrupting their lives, rushing to help in any way they could. This is what we must take from this. Good people, the vast majority of the people inhabiting this planet will stand together against this evil.
To all those affected by this terrible event, who have witnessed the darkness first hand, I hope that you can find your way back, though good knows how, to re-connect with the beauty of our planet and heal. All right minded people across the world, our thoughts are with you.

It is indeed devastating that anyone could even consider doing such atrocities. And then, in all the sadness and darkness, that’s when the beauty, compassion and love becomes evident in all those people that don’t succumb to evilness. I am always reluctant to use the word evil, because it’s such a one-dimensional description, but what else is there to say?

That has certainly been evident here Otto. It’s facing atrocity that we remember we are human and we unite in grief and do what we can. This is the spirit imbued in us. A shame we can’t always remember that on a day to day basis.

Here in Canada, even in my small city we are following the news with concern for the families and sadness for the injured and killed. Good for ones who act to help and provide comfort when able to do so.

Thank you Lee. It is indeed difficult amidst such sadness, but we have seen so many examples in the last 24 hours of selfless acts that reaffirm our belief in humanity and the human spirit. Goodness does indeed outweigh evil.

Tears came as I read of the compassion that emerged out of the horrors of last night. Yet, I find it is important for me to take this as a reminder of the danger that hides within my own sense of righteous anger as it has the potential to recreate the events of last night. I once wrote, “Christ stood before self-righteous anger and commanded that only the one without sin was to cast the first stone of punishment and, at another time and in the midst of his own suffering, sought forgiveness for those who “know not what they do.” Within these written words, I hear compassion speaking for the suffering intertwined within anger ungoverned by moral shame and moral dread. Compassion is telling us how suffering, entangled into knots of mental, emotional, and social turmoil, deafens us to our guiding principles and blinds us to the horrors our moral shame will witness as it awakens from darkened ignorance.” Thank you for sharing your words and your images are always a gift of beauty.

Beautifully said indeed. In Australia, I think we were all just as shocked when the news was aired on our TV news. I, personally, find these acts of atrocity extremely disturbing. I feel such sadness for the families and friends of those lost, or injured.
How do they recover and move on with their lives? I really can’t imagine.
Its a timely reminder of the need to be vigilant as we go about our daily lives, but also a reminder that there’s goodness in the world (as well as evil) and the need for solidarity against terrorism.

It was an horrific attack, as you say, all the more shocking given the target. It is without doubt that there are more good people in this world than bad. Sadly it seems, IS has given some very evil people license to behave in a manner that is simply barbaric, medieval in it’s cruelty. For others, IS has preyed on their vulnerablity and simply brainwashed them into giving their life in pursuit of terror. Good will prevail, it always has. It’s just so sad that so many will suffer before we can close this particular chapter of human madness. Thanks for your comment Nil.

It is indeed, very sad Tina. For the right minded among us, we just can’t grasp the barbarity. It’s as if we’ve never moved on from the middle ages. At least these people haven’t. There are clearly people out there who are using this ideology to justify murdering innocent people. What IS is doing in the Middle East just not bear thinking about and there desire to export this terror is very frightening indeed.

I am very late reading this, Adrian. The last three weeks have left me pre-occupied and I have spent very little time on WP. On the night of the London Bridge attack, my daughter was on her way to London Bridge when a message from her husband alerted her to head towards a different station for a train home. Son, who lives just south of the Elephant heard the almost continuous sound of sirens and knew instinctively that something bad had happened.

Thank you Andy. It’s a very worrying time. It must be particularly worrying for you as a parent, with you son and daughter living and traveling around the capital. I lived in Islington when the bombs went off on the tube and the bus on 7/7. I knew I had to contact my parents as soon as I heard to let them know I was OK. I vividly remember that evening, crowds of people walking up from the city and along Upper Street heading north, an exodus of sorts. A very subdued mood palpable. We have to carry on living our lives of course and not let the terrorists win.

Thank you Gin. Yes there is hope. I always felt privileged when I was teaching 14-18 year olds. These kids were the future and for the most part, they were all good people in the making and it was a fantastic antidote to the terrible news heard far too regularly. Sadly there are far too many bad people out there but there are far more good people.
