On the beach again..

A visit to the beach in Iceland in winter is a wonderful thing.  The black sand, the snow and ice, the wonderful light, it really is something to be savoured.  I’ve put together some pictures here of one particular visit to the beach where during the course of the day, the wind rose from about 3 m/s that’s about 6 miles per hour to about 30 m/s, that’s getting on for 70 miles per hour.  This was one of those occasions, and I mentioned it in my last post, where getting out of the car can be extremely difficult unless you position the car carefully.  Damage to doors on hire cars is extremely common in Iceland when unsuspecting tourists park up, open the door with the car facing downwind and the door is subsequently wrenched off its hinges.  Extreme wind speeds are commonplace and even more so in winter.  I just needed to get out to take a picture, standing was difficult, I had to hang on to the tripod and to the car and somehow get a composition and press the shutter but I think it was worth it.  I’ll be posting some more pictures from a little further down the coast in due course.. :-D

Wonderful beach shots, never get snow on a beach in Australia, it looks very strange to see a wave with snow right to the water line.

    February 17, 2016 at 12:21 am

    • Snow and beaches and Australia are certainly not things that would go together in my mind Lee. I should imagine these photographs are particularly incongruous to an Australian. I just love the contrast between the snow, the surfline and the black sand with the white of the crashing waves. :-)

  7. Utterly breathtaking! Well worth suffering the wild winds. Really enjoying the beauty of Iceland from the warm comfort of my cozy home! ;)

    • Thank you Gunta. England feels so much colder right now and it’s so much warmer than Iceland. When the air is dry, the cold really is bearable. In a damp relatively mild Cornwall, it’s miserable. :-)

      • I discovered that little tidbit of wisdom moving from the coast to Utah! The same is true when it’s ungodly hot, too! :)

        February 17, 2016 at 7:03 pm

      • Hmm, I guess it would be, the higher the humidity, the hotter it would feel!

  8. Good point to remember about extreme winds wrenching doors off.
Those pictures are gorgeous; I love the image of winter on a beach, something about all the earthly elements coming together makes it even more charming.

  11. Awesome pics ….I also particularly like the one of the interface between the waves coming in and the snow on the beach ….breathtaking. … beautiful work!! So glad the car doors stayed on… : )))

    February 17, 2016 at 9:59 pm

    • Thank you Trees! Having seen the damage to car doors a few times and not wanting to lose my deposit, I’m always very careful on that one! :-)

      February 19, 2016 at 7:33 am

  12. All beautiful, but my favourite has to be the second image with the blueish snow and the strip of blue sky. I appreciate the efforts you go to Adrian to get these shots! Stay safe :)

  13. Wonderful Adrian – the colours of Iceland are one of its defining features, so different from anywhere else I think. You have got them!

  18. Both the landscape and the climate is quite extreme on Iceland, isn’t it! But when you face the challenges and have an excellent eye for photos, the result is gorgeous photos like these. :-)

    February 21, 2016 at 7:55 am

    • It is indeed quite an extreme landscape Otto, especially in winter. Thank you for this lovely comment.

      February 21, 2016 at 9:43 am

  19. It’s really interesting to see the beaches covered in snow. Nice atmosphere ! I hope it wasn’t too windy over there !

    February 21, 2016 at 12:36 pm

    • It’s the contrast of the snow against the black sand that I like so much Gin. It was very windy at times but on only one occasion did it really get in the way of what we wanted to do. :-)

      February 21, 2016 at 6:20 pm

      • The contrast is very interesting, I understand why you like it so much.

  26. I’ve always thought it difficult to photograph winter. But you seem to know how to make it look interesting. I’ve been to Iceland in the summer. Your photos make me want to go back there. :)

    February 27, 2016 at 7:09 am

    • Thank you very much. I’ve had a fair bit of practice photographing the Icelandic winter and I guess practice is the key to all things. I’m glad my photographs evoke good memories for you. Iceland in winter is so very beautiful I can highly recommend a visit at this time of year. :-)

      February 28, 2016 at 5:28 pm

  27. Just catching up here. These are some of my favorite Iceland images. I just love the spaciousness and noisiness of them.
