Balloon at Dawn..

A friend of mine was taking a balloon trip this week, a father’s day gift from his children and he asked me if I’d like to go along and photograph the event.  I thought this was a great idea. I didn’t think it was such a great idea as I dragged myself from my bed at 3.30 on Wednesday morning but I was committed.  As dawn broke I found myself in a field just outside Launceston, about an hours drive away from home.

I found the process of getting the balloon ready for flight fascinating and for me as a photographer, it was an interesting challenge given my usual subject, the landscape, tends not to get up and float away.  Anyway, here’s one of the pictures..

There’s been rather a lot going on this week for me, one way and another, and I must apologise for not being quite so attentive as I usually am in following all your blogs.  I will get around to your posts as soon as I can..

Oh and remember, last day for entries in the Digital Lightroom Urban Landscape Photography Competition..

  1. I don’t think I’ve ever seen ballooning look quite so dramatic!
….. and good on you for sticking to your guns – never miss an opportunity, you don’t know what might come of it.

    • Thank you Noeline. Always best to grab an invite like this one as you never know what might come of it :-)

  3. Superb. Getting the exposure right could not have been easy. This is more than spot-on, colours are so vivid. Love it.

    • Thank you David. Really appreciate that.

  4. What a beautiful image, Adrian….will look forward to more of your images from the air…….

    • Thank you very much Scott. As it was, on this occasion, I didn’t get to fly, I was just there to take pictures from the ground. I’m hoping to persuade the ballooning company to give me a flight though, in exchange for using the photo. I’ll keep you posted.. ;-)

      • You’re very welcome…and I think you should get at least a handful of flights for the image…and any others that you might have…you could be their ad-guy. Truly wonderful shot, Adrian….I’ll be waiting for an update on the flight situation….. :)

      • Thanks again Scott! :-)

  5. This is an incredible shot, Adrian! Love how vibrant the colors of the balloon are.

    • Thank you very much Gracie. These hot air balloons make such colourful, spectacular subjects. I’m hoping to attend a ballooning festival later in the year for more pictures.

  6. That’s wonderful, Adrian! Almost surreal with all those popping colours.
    I love the ballon’s name!

    • Thanks Karen. It was fun tackling a slightly different form of photography and what great subjects hot air balloons make.

      June 28, 2013 at 9:48 pm

  7. Wow great color on the balloon. Great drama in the sky also. I have always wanted to photography hot air balloons and your photo has now made me want to do it even more. Thanks for sharing your beautiful image.

    • Thank you Mark. I really appreciate that. When my friend told me he had this flight, I jumped at the opportunity to photograph it as, like you, balloons are a subject I’d always wanted to tackle. As I mentioned to Gracie, I’m hoping to attend a balloon festival in August. Photographing a whole bunch taking off into the dawn or evening sky would be quite something. I’m sure if you Google balloon flight’s in your area, you’ll be able to pin down a launch site or perhaps Google ‘balloon festival’ and see if there’s anything planned close by.

      • Thanks for providing additional insight and for your suggestion. We recently had a Wine and Balloon festival near San Diego. The 100F+ forecast temperatures, $50 PP entry fee and reported traffic congestion kept us away.

        June 28, 2013 at 10:06 pm

      • I think that would have kept me away too. The Bristol International Balloon Fiesta here in the UK is free. The car park costs about $10 for the day. I guess getting there from San Diego though is going to make it an expensive day out for you, despite the free entry and cheap car parking. I’m sure you’ll find somewhere you can photograph balloons for nothing. I’d imagine ballooning is quite popular in California.

Beautiful shot, I missed the festival we had a few weeks ago, so will put it in the diary for next year, but actually went on a balloon ride last November, loved it!

    June 28, 2013 at 10:06 pm

    • Thank you. I’m envious. I haven’t had a flight yet but my friend’s experience and watching the balloon take off has convinced me it’s something I’d like to do very much.

    June 29, 2013 at 12:10 am

    • Thank you Gunta! On this occasion it might have been better if I’d stayed up rather than got up but I was alright once I got going.. :-)

  19. I like the dramatic sky against the colourful balloon, peaceful. I had the pleasure of going up in a balloon about 10 years ago. It is so peaceful and quiet up there and the views are breathtaking. Its a must Adrian.
Hope everything is ok with you after your busy week, take care :)

  33. I took a balloon ride a couple of years ago in New Mexico. I was disappointed because I was expecting something like Around the World in 80 Days. It didn’t last that long and the other thing is I’m afraid of height. I hope you had a good experience- the photo looks great.

    July 21, 2013 at 9:49 pm

    • Thanks James. Sorry your experience was disappointing. I didn’t get to take a balloon ride myself. I would quite like to give it a try but it is expensive and as you say, these rides don’t last very long.

      July 22, 2013 at 7:11 am

      • Your right about expensive, our ride was $ 250 for about 30 to 45 minute ride. We originally booked a ride for only 2 to 4 people. He canceled and we ended up in a basket with 6 or 8 people and we were like sardines. It something that we always wanted to do. It is done and probably would not waste our time or money on another ride. BUT I like photographing them and have in the past. I’ll see if I can find any of those photographs. The experience wasn’t all that bad but it wasn’t what we expected – Disappointed Thanks for asking. Jim

        July 22, 2013 at 2:19 pm

      • When we were waiting for the balloon people to arrive at the meeting place. These cars kept turning up with more and more people and I was thinking, how are they all going to fit into this balloon. As it turned out, they were all packed in like sardines and I was glad not to be going along for the ride. I was quite happy taking pictures from the ground. I’d like to see your photos if you can dig them out. :-)
