Fishing for Bass

I was down on the beach at first light this morning and, unusually at this time, I was not alone.  A fisherman was out in the surf casting for bass.  He didn’t catch anything but as we were chatting, I suggested it wasn’t really about the fish though was it?  To be out here at dawn surrounded by all this beauty, ‘No’ he agreed, it wasn’t about the fish.  If he caught anything it was a bonus and I feel pretty much the same about my photography.  If I get a picture it’s a bonus, as it was this morning, thanks in part to my new friend the fisherman and a rather impressive medium format Phase One 645 DF camera, a P45+ digital back and a Schneider Kreuznach LS 28mm f/4.5 Aspherical lens but more about all that another time.  For now, I hope you enjoy the picture.  I certainly enjoyed taking it. ;-)

    • Thanks David. Unusual for me to have people in my pictures but I was willing to make an exception for the bass fisherman. He was a great old guy, beard, sou’wester hat, the works. I noticed he had a bucket with him to carry home his fish but it was such a tiny bucket, I’m sure he wasn’t planning on catching a whole lot, just wanted to be out there fishing.

  8. nice picture. I still have two very fine 645s from back in the film days… just bring me memories these days.

    October 13, 2013 at 4:18 am

    • Thank you Shimon. How lovely to have those cameras even if you don’t use them these days. I imagine you slotted a film cartridge where today you attach a digital sensor. I’ve really enjoyed my outings with the 645 these last few days.

  9. I love the peace and tranquility this shows.
A whole beach to yourself at that time in the morning must be an amazing feeling :)

    • Thank you Angi. It is lovely to be on the beach at the time of day, swept clean by the tide, the sand is devoid of all footprints and so inviting.

  17. I certainly enjoyed the picture. Wonderful colours and strong composition, both of them transcending the mood of the place at the early morning.

    October 14, 2013 at 1:05 pm

    • Thank you very much Otto. It was nice to have a figure in one of my pictures for a change. The fisherman certainly lends a sense of scale to the scene.

      October 14, 2013 at 2:09 pm

  18. Eeek! A digital back for a medium format camera. Jealous! And I want to hear more…
It is so much about the being there, but lucky us to get a taste of it too, thanks to your great eye and excellent workmanship.

I love the scale of your lone fisherman (no pun intended) :-) in this gorgeous landscape.

    October 14, 2013 at 5:34 pm

    • Thank you Karen. The fisherman was concerned about getting in the way of my picture but I was very grateful to him. He really did lend scale to the scene. I will be posting more about the camera in the next week or two.
It is often said, and rightly so, that it’s the photographer and not the camera that makes the picture etc etc but if the photographer happens to have a medium format camera with a 40 megapixel digital back handy when he or she is making that picture, it really is a big plus. :-D

  22. Beautiful shot, Adrian. I’m guessing that has to be Trebarwith again, judging by the shape of that rock out in the bay.

    October 14, 2013 at 9:33 pm

    • Thank you Andy. Yes I was down at Trebarwith again. I really do love that beach. :-)

  25. Could not have said it any better, “To be out here at dawn surrounded by all this beauty” and then to get a shot like you did above is just a perfect way to begin a day…

  28. Awesome shot Adrian, it’s sharp, crisp, good lighting, and lots of mood but to have a bass fisherman in it may never happen again. I checked out your website and it is looking pretty good. I apologize for taking so long to respond to your post – I’ve been under the weather these past several weeks but doing pretty good now. Keep the magnificent picture coming.
