On Reflection..

The warm, sunny and calm conditions on my recent trip to Inverness allowed for some great opporunities to photograph reflections in the many lochs that you’ll find in this area of Scotland.  The castle is Eilean Donan Castle at Dornie where three lochs meet, Loch Duich, Loch Long and Loch Alsh.

Ah, lovely images! Brings back some memories for me…visited late last century!

    April 22, 2015 at 6:26 pm

    • It’s a beautiful place Sue isn’t it? The weather I have to say was quite extraordinary for our visit as you can see from the photographs. I was expecting to be photographing brooding skies with lots of drama. Instead I got lots of picture postcard images but I’m certainly not complaining. It was a fabulous break! :-)

        Glad to hear it!

How unexpectedly clear and bright the skies are in Scotland , these dispel any notions that it ALWAYS rains in Scotland ! I think I could easily lose myself there for sometime after looking at these gorgeous images … The views do seem to go on forever , and the reflections so mirror like …. Just wonderful . I love the submerged solitary tree ChillB … *almost feel I could paddle out to it x

    April 22, 2015 at 6:38 pm

    • Thank you Poppy! The weather was certainly unexpected and as you say, perhaps go some way to dispelling the myth about Scottish weather. I feel another Poppy and ChillB excellent photographic adventure coming on. ;-) I was really taken with the solitary tree also. It seemed so incongruous. How it was growing there I’ve no idea but it seemed quite happy! :-)x

Can’t promise such weather next week … but hey … we LIKE clouds and a bit of drama :-)

  5. Admire the landscape, so beautiful in your photos! Weather a bit different from Iceland ;)

    April 22, 2015 at 7:45 pm

    • Thank you Bente. It is a very beautiful landscape and yes, the weather really was very different to Iceland! :-)

      April 22, 2015 at 7:52 pm

  6. Such clarity, such light. Amazing reflections. Any one of these would look sensational adorning a wall. My favourite has to be the last one, there is just something about that cloud! As an aside, have you ever had an exhibition Adrian?

    April 22, 2015 at 8:11 pm

    • Thank you very much Jude, that’s a lovely compliment. I haven’t exhibited my work. I should have a think about it I suppose.. not sure where I’d hold such a thing.. :-)

      April 22, 2015 at 8:27 pm

      • Well, there are many art galleries in Cornwall, I guess you just start by talking to them!

        April 22, 2015 at 8:28 pm

      • I will do some research Jude, thank you! :-)

The light and the stillness of the water is amazing Adrian. That lone tree in the water with reflection makes me look twice, three times a great image. Scotland! who’d a thought :)

    April 22, 2015 at 10:09 pm

    • Thank you Lee! The weather really was indredible and not what most people expect but my experiences of Scotland in spring and autumn have always been similar! :-)

      April 23, 2015 at 7:44 am

  8. Really great reflections, Adrian. The tree is my favourite.

    April 23, 2015 at 12:50 am

    • Thank you Sylvia! I’m rather partial to the little tree too! :-)

      April 23, 2015 at 7:44 am

  9. Wonderful series ~ the lighting and reflections really set the stage for the subjects you’ve included. The lone tree is perhaps my favorite, but the castle is just a sight you do not see much and is in this perfect setting. Cheers for all the shot :-)

    • Thank you very much Randall. Eilean Dolan is such a photogenic castle. Very much a fairytale setting! :-)

    • Thank you very much Isabel! :-)

  23. You make Scotland look even more beautiful than it already is. I do have a bit of favouritism for deep blue hues, and it amazes me that you were able to find them on the West Coast in such abundance. Every time I venture over there it is grey!

    April 24, 2015 at 6:37 pm

    • Thank you Sonja! I was prepared for very differenct weather and it was such a treat to be able to capture the colour in the landscape helped along by the sunshine! :-)

      April 25, 2015 at 5:47 pm

  24. Scotland did you proud with the weather. Beautiful shots.

    April 24, 2015 at 8:47 pm

    • It was pretty exceptional Noeline! So unexpected!

      April 25, 2015 at 5:44 pm

  27. What a beautiful countryside…even though it still has most of its winter-brown coat on. I absolutely love that second one, Adrian….gorgeous reflection!

    April 25, 2015 at 7:51 pm

    • Thank you Scott! It was nice to see how much colour there was in the landscape despite as you say, the landscape has yet to shed its winter coat!

      April 25, 2015 at 8:53 pm

  28. I think you should get in touch with Scotland Tourism with these! Your really have captured Dornie in full glory!

    April 26, 2015 at 7:34 pm

    • Thank you for the compliment Sarah! Eilean Dolan couldn’t have been seen under any better conditions. It was a fabulous day which culminated with a drive around Skye. Perfect.

      April 27, 2015 at 3:37 pm

      • I haven’t been that far north for ages and really must remedy it sometime! I have an aunt near Stirling and family in the Isles too :-) Just love Scotland!!

        May 1, 2015 at 10:53 am

      • Thanks Sarah! I went to Stirling University and studied there both as an undergraduate and postgraduate. I lived there for about 8 years in total and like you, I love Scotland! :-)

  31. Gorgeous reflections in this mirror like water. Some of your compositions have added surprises too – I cannot work out where the tree is in the second one – in the middle of the water? And the last one with the mossy rocks under the actual castle and on the other shore – almost looks like a double layered castle!

    May 1, 2015 at 3:44 am

    • Thank you Carol! Surprisingly this little tree was growing in the water creating a really interesting image. I think it was clinging to a rock just below the surface of the water. Reflections of this nature can be quite intrigueing and I was really lucky to be able to capture so many on such a lovely still day! :-)

      May 1, 2015 at 3:58 pm

  32. A bit envious of the locales and of the still waters . . . Great shots, as usual.

    May 4, 2015 at 6:52 pm

    • Thanks Emilio! The scenery was just fabulous and the weather perfect. Not always like that in Scotland that’s for sure but we were very lucky! :-)

      May 4, 2015 at 7:20 pm

  33. Nice series Adrian. I don’t get to photograph very many reflections living in an arid climate. The third one is especially captivating.

    May 5, 2015 at 4:35 pm

    • Thank you Jim! It was great to see the lochs so still allowing for these wonderful reflections. I too like no. 3 especially. :-)

  34. Your scottish trip looks like it was a resounding success and blessed with some superb weather, Adrian. I’m late viewing this. Have spent the last week upgrading the Mac OS, loading Photoshop CC and Nik software and finalising a talk on B&W photography. And that’s besides all the work involved in planning a house move – an ongoing extravaganza!.

    May 5, 2015 at 7:17 pm

    • The Scottish trip really was a great success Andy! I’ll certainly be going again. You’ve certainly got your hands full at the moment. I’m seriously thinking of upgrading to photoshop CC. I’m currently using CS6. I’m not entirely convinced as yet, that the upgrade is worth doing but I’m keeping a close eye on developments.
For the next couple of weeks whilst we wait to see if our politicians might develop some maturity, stop thinking about their egos and create a coalition that works for all the citizens of this country I’m leaving.. was that a pig I just saw flying past the window.. ’til the dust settles. I’m going to be in Iceland pursuing a particular project that seems to be coming together quite nicely. I’ll be happily immersed in photography for the next fortnight and can’t wait. I’m sure your talk will be a great success and hope the planning for your move is coming along well. :-)
