A Stormy Day at the Beach..

..With a good friend and fellow blogger Poppy Tump.

With Poppy visiting for the next week, we’re looking forward to a fabulous week of photography.  Lots of locations planned, today it was Chapel Porth.  Here the gale force winds were whipping the salt in the water to a rich creamy foam.  It was fascinating to watch and photograph.

Having been thoroughly sand and salt blasted and with lots of images captured, we stopped at Crantock near Newquay on the way home to allow Poppy to give Lottie a run on a slightly more sheltered beach.  Having said that, the patterns in the sand, created by wind, indicate it wasn’t that much more sheltered. It was a good start to the week. ;-)

40px spacerI’m happy to say I have just been commissioned to produce photographs to hang in a large hotel in Lostwithiel.  The hotel is popular with tourists from Italy, Germany and the USA, keen to see (and hopefully take home copies of) images of the places they visit whilst in Cornwall. :-)

    • Thank you Marina. The last is my favourite too. Lovely to have friends to stay and Lottie is such a lovely dog. It’s fun to have her along. She’s very patient when we’re taking pictures but would rather be chasing a ball on the beach of course.. :-)

  7. Such a contrast in mood between the images. So much drama and power when the water is exploding against the rocks, and then such peace and calm in the last image. All very beautiful and well composed images Adrian!

  11. Gorgeous, the last is especially compelling with those long bands of turquoise and white. Congratulations on the commission, it’s so lovely to hear that your years of dedication are paying off. :-)

    • Thank you Vivian. With any artistic type endeavour it always seems to take a lot of time but if you work at it, little by little things seem to start to fall into place. :-)

  14. Lovely photos Adrian – I especially like the forms of the foam in the first one, and the sea colour in the last is just wonderful!

    • Thank you very much Anna. Cornwall can look quite exotic at times. Fine sand a clear sky shows everything off beautifully.

      May 14, 2014 at 4:18 pm

  15. Beautiful images Adrian. I love the first image. The crashing waves look like milk.

    May 11, 2014 at 12:55 pm

    • Thank you very much Edith. It was a challenge with the spray and the salt but it’s usually worth the effort, getting that close to the ocean!

  16. Congratulations on the commission. Next time we’re in Lostwithiel I’ll have to nip in for a cuppa and take a look :)

  21. Congratulations, Adrian, I am sure your photos will do very well. And this is a great series, make a lot of promises for what is comming from a week of photography. I am amazed how you catched the milky parts of the first wave with “only” 1/160 (you know I studie your details given, might learn something).

    May 11, 2014 at 3:51 pm

    • Thank you so much Bente! So far the week has been very full. I’m struggling to keep up with images and posts. The weather is perfect and I know Poppy is having a very good time.

      May 14, 2014 at 4:14 pm

  22. Congrats on the assignment, Adrian. Hope you and Poppy have a great week. You’ve despatched the gales our way. The weather just isn’t fair at this time of year. Fresh young foliage and Wisteria blooms ripped from their attachments. But by the sea the weather creates some superb images.

    May 11, 2014 at 5:13 pm

    • Thank you very much Andy! For a change the weather in Cornwall really has been behaving itself. We’re having a great week. Sorry to hear about the wisteria. Such a beautiful plant in full bloom as I’ve just seen it at Lanhydrock.

      May 14, 2014 at 4:11 pm

  25. Wow…….great news, Adrian. Congratulations to you. Wonderful images of that wild and windy coastline. Such a contrast to the last pic. A great place for Lottie to work off some energy. :)

    May 11, 2014 at 8:03 pm

    • Thank you Sylvia. Crantock was really lovely and yes Lottie had a great time!

      May 14, 2014 at 4:01 pm

  26. So many times when I see images or the sea they are long exposures and the waves have become white mist. I love the fact with these you have frozen the action showing the roughness and brutality of the sea while making the images beautiful and intriguing. Congrats on the commission as well.

    May 11, 2014 at 8:12 pm

    • Thank you Ben. Very much appreciated!

  30. Congratulations, and the last shot is phenomenal…love the striations on the sand.

    May 15, 2014 at 1:49 am

    • Thank you Randall. Really quite strange, the patterns the wind can make in the sand. :-)

What a wild start to a fabulous week of photography ChillB what with the sea and salt being whipped up there like dream topping at Chapel Porth. You captured Lottie and I having quite a hair raising time running along there on Crantock beach ;-)
I was amazed at the colour of the water and those shifting sand patterns were such fun to watch … certainly a lovely beach to visit … bouncy dogs especially relish the freedom and space !

    May 17, 2014 at 4:31 pm

    • Thank you Poppy. It was a fabulous start to the week indeed. From the foam to the shifting sands, it all made for some interesting and challenging photography. So nice to see Lottie (and Poppy) enjoying their run on the beach so much. Crantock is certainly somewhere I will return to now.
